7zip

The fast and free way to compress/decompress almost anything: 7zip.

If you've been reading along so far, you know that I love my apps super functional but they tend to be rather ugly unfortunately. Today is no different!

7zip will open almost any kind of archiving format and can of course zip up everything in many formats as well. Most of all though, it is fast! It's also open source, as you've come to expect from these posts as well.

If you're still using WinZip, or WinRAR, or just using Windows Explorer.. please do yourself a favor. WinZip and WinRAR, if you're not paying for them (and you shouldn't) are basically extortionware, how do you put up with the constant dialogs to purchase a license 😬

Hopefully none of this is new for most of you, but here's something interesting you might not know: one of the versions is a standalone console version which you can use in your batch or Powershell scripts to do (faster!) decompressing of almost any archive and to compress files in a million different ways.

I'll conclude this post by showing you my favorite way to quickly unzip a file, right-click and drag the file to where you want to unzip it and then going into the 7zip menu accept the default location it wants you to unzip the file. I promise the gif above wasn't sped up in any way.. easy peasy:
